Women come in all shapes and sizes, and hopefully we can agree there is no “best” or “worst” body type. Sure, a certain type may be fashionable in your particular geographic locale, or even at this period in time, but this does not mean your body type is “bad”. All body types have pros and cons, and knowing your body type is simply about dressing to look your best!
Throughout history the “ideal” body type has changed. During the Victorian period, the hourglass was perfection, and required women to don corsets to get that look. In the 1920’s, the ideal woman’s body was a boyish rectangular type. And the poodle skirts of the 1950s flattered a pear shaped bottom.
Flash forward to the 1980’s when the aerobics fad hit and the ideal body became athletic and buxom. The 2000’s are when women became obsessed with the “bootylicious” bottom and curvy bodies were center stage.
Women have now started to place more emphasis on health and fitness. Gym culture has really taken hold and sculpted muscles are no longer seen as unfeminine. All body types are welcomed and fashions have turned to expressing comfort and personal style above all else.
HERE ARE SOME TIPS FOR DRESSING FOR YOUR UNIQUE BODY TYPE!
The hourglass figure is where the bust and hip are approximately the same size, and the waist is narrow. This gives you a set of sexy, killer curves. When dressing your hourglass figure, look for styles and fabrics that reduce bulk and prevent a boxy look. Seek out pieces that draw attention to your narrow waist!
- Look for snug, tailored pieces
- Stick with short, shaped jackets
- Consider a wrap blouse or dress
- Wear low, slimming necklines.
- Avoid volume-enhancing details.
- Stick with solid colors.
- Wear mid-rise or high-rise pants.
Curvy hips, thick thighs, and a full rear are the key characteristics of the pear-shaped woman. Many pear shapes also have a small bust, narrow shoulders, and defined waist. Keep your proportions in check by drawing the eye to your upper body while de-emphasizing your lower half.
- Choose tops in bright colors and prints.
- Wear shirts that extend below your hips.
- Stick to dark colors on bottom.
- Choose straight leg or flared pants.
- Skirts should hit the knee or ankle.
- Pick A-line dresses or tulip-skirts.
- Look for pointed toe shoes that will elongate your legs.
With this body type, you may have a long, thin body that tends to lack curves. It is sometimes referred to as a “boyish” profile. Your aim is to wear clothes that flatter your thin profile, break up, your silhouette, and create curves that move up and down from the waist area. This is one of the easier body types for dressing!
- Add a belt to your dress to create curves.
- Go for ruffles and frills to add texture, volume, and femininity.
- Opt for the skinny jeans not baggy ones.
- Stock up on miniskirts and bright tights.
- Shift and empire line dresses are best.
- Wear rounded shoes (ballerinas and pumps).
- Use strong blocks of color.
Generally described as “top-heavy”, this is where the bust is three or more inches bigger than the hips. Just by looking at yourself in the mirror, you can typically see if you are an apple body type. To dress successfully for the apple body, you need to direct attention away from your mid riff.
- Emphasize the top & lower third of your body.
- Wear long sleeves and V-neck tops.
- Pick flared pants to balance out wide shoulders.
- Avoid dresses and belts that cinch at the waist.
- Avoid puffy jackets, shapeless garments and clingy t-shirts.
- Emphasize your bust with a great bra.
- Show off your legs with a pair of short-shorts or high heels.
Body types aren’t always clearly defined and it’s possible to be slightly in between two. Try incorporating tips for each body type, and seeing what looks best on you. Ask a fashion-conscious friend or family member for a second opinion if you’re unsure if something is working for you or not.
YOUR BODY SHAPE CAN BE ENHANCED BY DIET AND EXERCISE!
While genetics determine how body fat is carried on your body and you can’t alter this predisposition, there are ways to enhance how you feel in your own skin. Excessive weight tends to exaggerate body differences, often more prominently in Apple and Pear body types. By knowing your body type, you can create an exercise plan to cater to your specific needs and radically improve both your health and your appearance. Love the body you have, because there is only one you!
